One of the most infamous decisions made by the supreme court was the Dred Scott decision. In this case Dred Scott was a slave that lived in a non-slave state with his owner and then moved to a slave state. He sued for his freedom arguing that his time spent living in a free state entitled him to his freedom. However, the supreme court ruled that no black, free or slave, could claim US citizenship therefor they could not petition the court for their freedom. This case is extremely significant because every person in the US is granted equal rights and one of those rights is the right to petition the court but because of the color of his skin, these rights were taken from him. Personally I believe that the court should have ruled differently but this case took place in a very different time period.
